Kids of all ages, in all different grades, can experience stress in the classroom. The reason your child experiences stress at school can differ by grade, the tips for helping them manage those reasons are pretty universal. If the 2020 school year has gotten off to a rocky start, here’s what you can do to help your child handle school stress.
Slow Down
First, assess your morning routine. Mornings set the tone for the entire day so if things are chaotic, that’s likely to be carried well into the school day. Setting your alarm clocks just a few minutes early. You’ll be surprised just how effective those extra couple minutes can be. Next, assess the after school routine. Is your family schedule jam-packed? What can be moved or taken off the schedule to open up a little more “down-time”? This opens up more time to spend with family, watching a favourite TV show or movie together.
Go For A Walk
It doesn’t matter what season it is, it’s a known fact that getting outside and getting active is such an important tool for handling stress. Visiting your favourite walking or hiking trail is a great way to connect with your family. Explore your neighbourhood and maybe visit the park on your way home. It’s a great way to blow off some steam!
Catch More Z’s
Next, create a bedtime routine if you don’t think your child isn’t getting enough sleep. Leave time between getting homework done and getting to bed for your family to spend time together. If homework or testing is on their mind, it’s likely to take from the quality of sleep they get. Aim for them to get 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Sleep is a huge part of helping your child handle school stress.
Talk To The Teacher
Ask to meet with your child’s teacher. A teacher spends a significant amount of time with your child, and they can provide valuable input to help address any underlying causes of stress. The school counsellor could also have valuable input and it won’t hurt to schedule an appointment to have a discussion.
